As the country gears up and braces for the celebration of the country’s 179th Independence Anniversary, with activities expected to highlight Liberia’s history, national identity, democratic values, and commitment to unity, Dr. Herbert Brewer has been named ‘NHHmamNational Orator.’
Deputy Minister Information Minister for Public Affairs, Daniel Sando, who made the disclosure at the Ministry’s regular press Tuesday said this year’s theme is centered around Liberia’s enduring commitment to unity, patriotism, historical reflection, and national renewal.
According to him, Dr. Brewer’s oration is expected to inspire national reflection on Liberia’s journey as a sovereign nation while encouraging citizens to take collective responsibility in advancing national development and cohesion.
“The program will highlight Liberia’s history as a sovereign nation and underscore the importance of building a stronger and more unified Republic,” Sando stated.
Dr. Brewer, who has been selected as the National Orator, is a historian and academic with extensive experience in African American history, Atlantic history, and Liberia’s historical development.
He disclosed that the national orator’s full profile will be published on the Ministry of Information’s website and social media platforms to allow the public and media institutions to learn more about his academic and professional background.
He explained that Dr. Brewer holds a PhD, Master’s degree, and Bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Maryland and has served in several academic positions, including as an associate professor and director of historical research institutions.
Deputy Minister Sando further disclosed that this year’s Independence Anniversary will officially be celebrated in Buchanan City, Grand Bassa County, with activities beginning on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.
The celebrations will include several national programs, including the National Flag Raising Ceremony, presidential engagements, project dedications, thanksgiving services, cultural performances, and the official Independence Day ceremony.
Among the scheduled activities are the dedication of development projects by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai in Grand Bassa County, a national thanksgiving service, the Independence Fish Market program organized by the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority, and cultural activities organized by the Liberia National Tourism Authority.
The main Independence Day program is expected to take place on July 26, 2026, at the Fairground in Buchanan City, where the President and other government officials will lead the celebration.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Information also provided updates on several national issues, including the ongoing investigation into the alleged attempted shipment of suspected illicit drugs through Roberts International Airport.
According to the Ministry, the Joint Security Investigative Team has charged Global Logistics Services employee Philip Y. with multiple offenses, including criminal facilitation, solicitation, criminal conspiracy, and concealing property derived from a drug-related offense.
The charges follow investigations into six boxes declared as general cargo and destined for the United Kingdom.
The Ministry clarified that the investigation remains ongoing and additional persons may be questioned or charged based on evidence gathered.
The government also announced the arrival of 21 Liberians being repatriated from South Africa following concerns over xenophobic attacks against foreigners.
The Liberians are expected to arrive at the Roberts International Airport on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, through Ethiopian Airlines.
Additionally, the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority reported progress on the construction of the Clay National Fish Hatchery in Bong County.
The facility, expected to be completed by July 2027, will support fish production, create employment opportunities for young people, strengthen food security, and reduce Liberia’s dependence on imported fish farming inputs.
The Ministry also provided an update on electricity expansion efforts under the European Union-supported Liberia Energy Access Program, noting that low-voltage screening works have commenced in the Gbandi Farm community in Margibi County.
The project aims to expand reliable electricity access to communities through safe and sustainable distribution systems.
Deputy Minister Sando assured that the government remains committed to providing citizens with timely information on national programs, development initiatives, and ongoing investigations.
