The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), according to Cllr. Tiawan Gongloe, should be the one providing public updates on developments regarding the ongoing US$19 million cocaine case.
Speaking on the Truth Breakfast Show on Monday, Gongloe argued that the LDEA has the statutory mandate to investigate drug-related crimes and should therefore serve as the lead institution communicating developments in the high-profile case.
According to him, the current practice of the Police Director briefing the public on the matter represents an overlap of institutional responsibilities.
“The LDEA should be the one updating the public about the US$19 million cocaine case, not the Police Director,” Gongloe said. “This is an overlapping of functions. The LDEA has the statutory responsibility to update the public.”
His comments come amid heightened public interest in the case, which has attracted widespread national attention and intensified calls for transparency and accountability from the government.
Gongloe emphasized the importance of allowing state institutions to operate within their legally assigned mandates, arguing that clear lines of responsibility help strengthen public confidence and improve institutional accountability.
The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency has not publicly responded to Gongloe’s remarks.
