The Liberian Government announced that it has begun preparations for its tenure as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), with an inter-ministerial steering committee established to coordinate the country’s participation and priorities.
Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah said during the Ministry’s regular press briefing the government’s preparations ahead of Liberia’s role on the Council was well on course.
According to Minister Piah, the steering committee comprises key government institutions and is responsible for coordinating Liberia’s engagement on major global issues during its tenure.
He said the country’s priorities will focus on women, peace and security; youth, peace and security; climate change and natural resources; environmental protection; United Nations peacekeeping; and conflict mediation.
Piah disclosed that the government is also preparing for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, where Liberia will participate in several thematic engagements and side events related to its Security Council priorities.
He further announced that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai is expected to preside over the United Nations Security Council during Liberia’s presidency of the Council in December. Following the President’s participation, Liberia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and the Minister of Foreign Affairs will continue representing the country in Security Council activities throughout the remainder of the month.
The Minister said Liberia’s election to the Security Council reflects the country’s growing role in international affairs and demonstrates renewed confidence in its leadership on issues of peace, security, and global cooperation.
