MONROVIA–The Liberia National Police (LNP), through its Traffic Management Department, has intensified efforts to address the increasing number of road traffic accidents across the country, particularly along the Monrovia–Kakata–Ganta highway.
The police intervention follows a reported surge in deadly road crashes, including an incident in which 12 people reportedly lost their lives within a 24-hour period, raising renewed concerns about road safety and compliance with traffic regulations.
As part of efforts to reduce the growing number of road fatalities, the LNP held discussions with representatives of eight driver unions to strengthen cooperation and identify practical measures to improve road safety.
The engagement focused on several major causes of road traffic crashes, including speeding, reckless overtaking, overloading, unroadworthy vehicles, impaired driving, distracted driving, and other violations of traffic laws.
During the discussions, the LNP and transport stakeholders agreed on a number of measures aimed at preventing crashes and protecting road users.
The measures include stronger enforcement of traffic laws, expanded speed monitoring, increased vehicle inspections, improved driver training, public awareness campaigns, and enhanced emergency response following road accidents.
The LNP stressed that addressing Liberia’s road safety challenges requires collective action, emphasizing that road safety is not solely the responsibility of law enforcement.
The police called on drivers, transport operators, vehicle owners, passengers, and pedestrians to take greater responsibility for their actions and contribute to efforts aimed at protecting lives on the country’s roads.
The police also reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing traffic laws without fear or favor, while working closely with driver unions and other transport stakeholders to reduce road traffic crashes.
The latest engagement comes amid growing public concern over road safety in Liberia, particularly on major highways where speeding, reckless driving, vehicle conditions, and other traffic violations continue to pose serious risks to motorists and passengers.
The LNP said it will continue engaging transport stakeholders and strengthening traffic enforcement as part of broader efforts to reduce road crashes and prevent avoidable loss of lives.
