MONROVIA–The Executive Meeting of the African Federation of Teaching Regulatory Authorities (AFTRA) has ended in Congo Town, with members agreeing to hold the organization’s General Assembly before the end of this year.
Speaking at the close of the meeting, Education Minister Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah said the gathering marked the beginning of Liberia’s responsibility to host the wider AFTRA family for its 2027 conference.
Minister Jallah said Liberia’s participation in AFTRA provides an opportunity for the country to learn from the experiences of other African nations while developing a teacher professionalization framework that responds to Liberia’s own realities and needs.
She said the country remains committed to strengthening the teaching profession and ensuring that teachers are adequately supported through policies and regulatory frameworks that promote quality education.
AFTRA President Dr. Ebby Mubanga said Liberia’s hosting of the 14th Conference and 16th Roundtable in 2027 will provide an important opportunity for African countries to exchange experiences and strengthen teaching and learning across the continent.
Dr. Mubanga said AFTRA, which was founded in 2010 through an initiative involving education ministers from South Africa and Nigeria, brings together teaching councils, teacher unions, ministries of education, teacher service commissions and development partners.
He said the organization continues to serve as a platform for African countries to collaborate on issues affecting the teaching profession and improve education systems across the continent.
The conclusion of the Executive Meeting now sets the stage for the General Assembly later this year as Liberia prepares to welcome members of the wider AFTRA family for its major continental conference in 2027.
