The Ministry of Health has announced the arrest of a suspect allegedly linked to the spread of false information regarding a fake Ebola declaration in Liberia.
According to the Ministry, Paola N. Bedell was apprehended and subsequently turned over to the Liberia National Police (LNP) for investigation.
Authorities say the arrest comes amid growing concerns over the circulation of misleading reports on social media claiming that Liberia had recorded Ebola cases.
Health officials have repeatedly clarified that the country currently has no suspected, probable, or confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) and the John F. Kennedy Medical Center (JFKMC), recently issued a joint statement dismissing the reports as misinformation intended to create unnecessary panic among the public.
Officials warned citizens against spreading unverified information, emphasizing that only authorized health institutions are responsible for communicating outbreak-related information in Liberia.
The Ministry further encouraged the public to rely on official updates from the Ministry of Health and NPHIL, while investigations into the alleged disinformation continue.
The Liberia National Police has not yet released further details regarding the ongoing investigation.
