The Liberian government is mulling tougher actions against illegal miners whose operations are considered as threats to environmental safety and natural resources.
Addressing himself to the overwhelming plague of illegal mining nationwide, Minister of Mines and Energy, Matenokay Tingban, Tuesday pointed fingers at some rural communities, accusing them of supporting and protecting illegal mining activities across the country.
Minister Tingban alleged that certain communities are actively shielding unauthorized miners who operate heavy equipment such as excavators and use harmful chemicals on the soil.
He described the situation as a serious threat to the country’s natural resources and environmental safety, warning that illegal mining activities continue to undermine government efforts to regulate the extractive sector.
The Minister further disclosed that security personnel have been instructed to carry out strict inspections on excavators entering various counties as part of intensified efforts to curb illegal mining operations nationwide.
He emphasized that all mining operators must present valid licenses before commencing any mining activity, stressing that enforcement measures will be strengthened to ensure compliance with national mining regulations.
Minister Tingban also cautioned that individuals and communities found to be involved in illegal mining activities will face the full weight of the law as the government moves toward a nationwide crackdown on unauthorized operations.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns over the environmental and economic impact of illegal mining in several parts of Liberia, with authorities pledging stronger enforcement and tighter monitoring of mining activities across the country.
