MONROVIA -The Citizens Action Movement (CAM) has rejected a recent publication by the Independent Civil Society Union of Liberia (ICSUL) that accused Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti of spending US$35,000 monthly on personal branding, calling it a “baseless, malicious attempt” to undermine Liberia’s foreign policy leadership.
In a statement issued Monday, CAM said ICSUL’s article titled “PERSONAL BRAND BATTLE SURFACES AT FOREIGN MINISTRY” was misleading and designed to distract from Liberia’s recent diplomatic achievements.
CAM said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs engages professional communications support to coordinate messaging, monitor global media, and advance Liberia’s priorities at the UN Security Council and with bilateral partners.
The group argued this is standard practice for sovereign states, and that mischaracterizing institutional outreach as personal branding damages public trust.
“All contracts and payments within the Ministry are governed by the Public Procurement and Concessions Commission Act and are subject to audit by the General Auditing Commission,” CAM said. It called on actors to rely on official records rather than “anonymous rumors and unverified allegations.”
The group linked the controversy to Liberia’s election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, which it described as a national victory resulting from years of coordinated diplomacy led by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
CAM said Minister Nyanti has consistently credited the achievement to the collective effort of the Liberian state, its missions, and partners.
On appointments, CAM said diplomatic postings follow procedures set by the Civil Service Agency and require presidential approval. It rejected the narrative that competence had been replaced by loyalty, saying Liberia needs experienced professionals and disciplined institutions.
CAM commended Minister Nyanti for her professionalism and representation of Liberia abroad, saying under her leadership the country has reclaimed its voice in multilateral forums and strengthened partnerships.
“Her public engagement reflects an active, results-driven foreign policy fully aligned with President Boakai’s ARREST Agenda,” the statement said.
The group urged civil society, media, and political actors to ground commentary in fact, warning that “slander disguised as accountability weakens democracy.”
“In 2026, diplomacy demands both substance and strategic communication. To pit one against the other is to misunderstand modern statecraft,” CAM said.
The Citizens Action Movement said it stands with public officials advancing Liberia’s standing in the world and called on Liberians to support diplomacy that delivers results at home and abroad.
