The Liberian government is stepping up efforts to strengthen public trust in the digital space as part of a broader strategy to accelerate national development and combat the spread of misinformation.
Speaking Wednesday at the Liberia Internet Governance Forum 2026, held at the Liberia Learning Center, Deputy Minister for Administration at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism, Johnny Tarkpah, said building trust online has become essential in an era where digital platforms increasingly shape public discourse and citizen engagement.
Tarkpah noted that digital technologies are transforming the way Liberians access information, interact with government, and participate in national conversations.
However, he cautioned that these same platforms also present significant challenges, particularly the rapid spread of false information and the erosion of public confidence in credible sources.
He highlighted Executive Order No. 163, issued by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, as a key instrument in the government’s effort to promote accountability, transparency, and effective oversight across public institutions, including in the digital sphere.
“The government understands that trust must be earned through clear and consistent actions,” Tarkpah said, emphasizing the Ministry’s commitment to providing accurate, timely, and reliable information to the public.
As part of this effort, he outlined plans to strengthen fact-checking mechanisms, accelerate the dissemination of official information, and deepen collaboration with media institutions, civil society organizations, and technology stakeholders.
These measures, he said, are intended to ensure that citizens have access to credible information and are better equipped to identify and reject misinformation.
Tarkpah also called on media practitioners to uphold professional standards by thoroughly verifying information before publication and avoiding the spread of rumors or unsubstantiated claims.
He further announced that the government will expand its use of digital platforms to foster real-time communication and engagement with citizens, making governance more accessible, responsive, and transparent.
The Liberia Internet Governance Forum serves as an important platform for dialogue on the future of the country’s digital landscape, bringing together policymakers, technology experts, civil society, and media professionals to address emerging opportunities and challenges in the digital age.
As Liberia continues to embrace digital transformation, government officials say building trust, promoting transparency, and safeguarding the integrity of information will remain central to the country’s development agenda.
