Representative Sumo Mulbah has called on the administration of the John F. Kennedy (JFK) Medical Center to immediately investigate the medical treatment of a patient identified as Jestina, while urging the hospital to facilitate her emergency medical evacuation for specialized treatment abroad.
In a formal communication addressed to the hospital’s administration, Rep. Mulbah raised concerns over reports that Jestina allegedly suffered complications after receiving an injection in her back during a childbirth-related procedure.
The lawmaker stressed that healthcare institutions have a legal and ethical obligation to ensure that all medical procedures are carried out safely and in accordance with established clinical standards.
According to him, if a medical error occurred, the hospital could be held responsible under the principles of medical malpractice and employer liability for the actions of its medical personnel.
“We are monitoring this situation with the utmost gravity and urge the administration of the John F. Kennedy Medical Center to take immediate, transparent action to address these concerns before legislative oversight is initiated,” Mulbah stated.
He further recommended that the hospital arrange for Jestina’s immediate medical evacuation outside Liberia to receive specialized treatment, saying such action is necessary to preserve her life and health.
The representative emphasized that ensuring patient safety is a fundamental responsibility of every medical institution and warned that any failure to uphold acceptable standards of care, particularly during invasive medical procedures, must be met with accountability.
Mulbah also called for a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident, warning that failure to address the matter could result in formal legislative inquiry and possible regulatory action.
He maintained that the issue should be treated strictly as a humanitarian and healthcare matter, free from political influence.
“A life belonging to any individual must be approached with sincerity and not influenced by political matters. Jestina requires immediate support, and I align myself with everyone who is working to assist her in this battle,” he said.
As of press time, the administration of the John F. Kennedy Medical Center had not publicly responded to Rep. Mulbah’s concerns.
