Monrovia- In spite of the unending controversies surrounding the use of Liberian passport, with reports that non-Liberians are in possession of Liberian passports, its holders can access 34 African destinations through visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival, or electronic travel authorization, representing 64.2% access across the continent, according to new data from Passport Reports.
The figure is well above Liberia’s worldwide access rate of 28.8%. According to the report, Liberian passport, globally, holds a mobility score of 57, making up of 27 visa-free destinations, 28 destinations with visa-on-arrival or other simplified arrangements, and 2 electronic travel authorization (eTA) destinations, while a further 141 destinations require a visa before travel.
The report places Liberia at 162nd in the global passport ranking and 42nd out of 54 African countries. Data is listed as last checked September 9, 2026 and last updated June 29, 2026.
The report said Africa remains the strongest region for Liberian travelers, with 18 destinations said to be visa-free. The destinations include Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde (with EASE procedure), Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya (60 days), Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Rwanda (30 days), Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo (30 days), and Zambia.
It is reported that several carry 90-day stay limits, including Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Senegal, and Zambia, with 15 destinations, including Burundi, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, South Sudan, Comoros, DR Congo, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, and Uganda are visa-on-arrival or simplified entry. “Many also offer e-visa options,” the report detailed.
However, nineteen African countries still require a visa, including South Africa, Morocco, Angola, Botswana, Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Malawi, and Libya.
The report shows a stark regional gap with all 47 European destinations require a visa, all destinations in these groups require a visa, while only Philippines and Singapore are visa-free.
The Report say eight are visa-on-arrival including India, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Maldives, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka is eTA.
In the Caribbean which is 37.5%, there 5 visa-free destinations, and 1 visa-on-arrival with Oceania which represents 28.6%, Micronesia visa-free, and Palau, Samoa, Tuvalu visa-on-arrival.
For South America which also represents 25.0%, Ecuador and Suriname are visa-free, and Bolivia visa-on-arrival, while North America which is 21.7%, there are 4 visa-free, 1 visa-on-arrival, 18 visa-required.
The Report details destinations including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and the Schengen Area are all listed as visa-required for Liberians.
The Report says the 7-year trend shows Liberia’s Mobility Score peaked at 60 in 2022 and 2023, fell to 58 in 2024-2025, and now stands at 57 in 2026. The global rank has slipped from 147th in 2020 (during COVID-19) to 162nd in 2026.
The report also distinguishes outbound vs inbound access. Liberia is ranked 135th of 199 in welcoming countries, a measure of how easy it is for foreigners to enter Liberia.
Only the UAE can enter Liberia via simplified access while Liberians need a visa for the UAE. Conversely, 42 countries require a visa to enter Liberia even though Liberians get simplified access to them, including Kenya, Zambia, Singapore, India, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Barbados, Seychelles, and the Philippines.
In regional comparisons, Liberia is 107th of 132 G77 countries, 146th of 159 WTO members, 53rd of 60 English-official-language countries, and 53rd of 57 presidential republics.
The bottom line is that for Liberian travelers in 2026, the passport’s strength remains concentrated within Africa — with 64.2% continental access versus 28.8% globally.
