MONROVIA–The Liberia Traffic Management (LTM) has responded to growing public concerns over the quality of some newly issued vehicle license plates, clarifying that the plates shown in a viral social media video are temporary substitute plates issued under exceptional circumstances.
In a press statement issued Thursday, May 21, 2026, LTM said the controversial plates do not represent the standard quality of Liberia’s official vehicle registration system.
According to the agency, it currently has thousands of regular license plates in stock across different vehicle categories that meet higher international standards for durability, visibility, and security.
LTM explained that the plates being criticized belong to a special temporary category introduced because of delays in international shipments linked to ongoing global supply chain disruptions, including tensions involving Iran.
The institution said the temporary substitute plates were issued only in limited cases to avoid disruptions in public services while awaiting the arrival of standard materials.
“LTM was compelled, in limited instances, to issue temporary substitute plates for a specific vehicle category in order to ensure the continued and uninterrupted delivery of services to the public,” the statement noted.
Management also rejected claims circulating online that questioned the overall credibility of the country’s license plate system, describing the allegations as misleading and intended to damage public confidence in the institution.
The agency assured the public that efforts are ongoing to close the temporary gap and restore full uniformity across all vehicle classifications.
LTM emphasized that protecting the integrity and reliability of Liberia’s vehicle identification system remains one of its top priorities, adding that measures are being strengthened to improve transparency and operational consistency.
The public was further encouraged to seek verified information directly from the Liberia Traffic Management whenever concerns arise.
