Scores of women from Suakoko District are demanding the immediate reopening of Phebe Hospital, expressing concern that the continued suspension of healthcare services is endangering the lives of patients.
The women staged a peaceful protest on Thursday at the hospital’s main entrance, urging the Government of Liberia and relevant authorities to swiftly resolve the crisis that has disrupted operations at one of the country’s major referral health facilities.
According to the protesters, the disruption began following the withdrawal of health workers on July 6, leaving many patients without access to essential medical care. They claimed that some patients have reportedly died, while others have been referred to distant health facilities for treatment.
The demonstrators appealed to the management of Phebe Hospital and government authorities to take urgent action to restore normal services, emphasizing that the protection of lives should take precedence over administrative disagreements.
The ongoing strike by health workers is reportedly linked to unresolved grievances, including allegations that an investigative committee failed to release its findings within the timeframe previously promised.
As of Thursday, hospital authorities had not publicly announced when full healthcare services would resume, while residents continued to call for an immediate resolution to the impasse.
The situation has raised concerns among community members, who fear that prolonged disruptions at the referral hospital could further strain access to healthcare in Bong County and surrounding communities.
