Monrovia-The Legal Aid Clinic Program of the Liberia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church (LAC/UMC), with support from the General Board of Global Ministries, has secured the release of 63 pretrial detainees from Monrovia Central Prison through the Magistrate Sitting Program of the Temple of Justice during October 2026.
The UMC Legal Aid Clinic served as one of the legal defense service providers under the program, which was established to provide legal assistance to indigenous citizens and foreign residents, including individuals held in pretrial detention.
The initiative also seeks to address overcrowding at Monrovia Central Prison and improve access to justice for vulnerable individuals awaiting trial.
The release of the 63 detainees highlights the importance of legal representation, timely judicial proceedings, and collaboration between the judiciary and legal aid providers in promoting justice and protecting the rights of accused persons.
The 63 pretrial detainees were released through six magistrate courts during October. From the Paynesville City Magistrate Court, 19 detainees were released, 16 from the Bushrod Island Magistrate Court, 12 from Omega Magistrate Court, 6 from Brewerville City Magistrate Court and 5 from Gardnersville Magistrate Court, while 5 also released from Monrovia City Magistrate Court.
The Paynesville City Magistrate Court recorded the highest number of releases, with 19 detainees, followed by the Bushrod Island Magistrate Court with 16 and the Omega Magistrate Court with 12.
Meanwhile, UMC reaffirms commitment to Justice and human dignity, according to Rev. Cllr. J. Abel Knight, Associate Director for Legal Affairs of the Department of Human Rights of the Liberia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.
He emphasized the importance of protecting the right of individuals in pretrial detention.
He said “The release of these 63 pretrial detainees demonstrates the importance of access to justice, legal representation, and timely judicial proceedings. Every individual deserves a fair opportunity to have their case heard in accordance with the law. Through the Legal Aid Clinic Program, The United Methodist Church continues to support efforts that uphold human dignity, protect the rights of vulnerable persons, and address the challenge of overcrowding at Monrovia Central Prison.”
Rev. Cllr. Knight’s statement underscores the importance of ensuring that indigent citizens and foreign residents, particularly those awaiting trial, receive appropriate legal assistance and that their cases are handled fairly and without unnecessary delay.
The Magistrate Sitting Program was established primarily to help decongest the overcrowded Monrovia Central Prison by facilitating judicial proceedings for individuals held in pretrial detention.
Pretrial detention refers to the period during which an accused person is held in custody while awaiting the determination of a criminal case. Access to legal representation and timely court proceedings is essential to safeguarding the rights of these individuals and upholding the principles of justice and due process.
With support from the General Board of Global Ministries, the LAC/UMC Legal Aid Clinic continues to contribute to broader efforts to strengthen access to justice by providing legal assistance to indigent citizens and foreign residents who may otherwise face difficulties securing legal representation.
The release of 63 detainees in October 2026 represents a significant development in ongoing efforts to address challenges associated with pretrial detention. It also highlights the value of cooperation between judicial institutions and organizations providing legal assistance to vulnerable individuals.
The Liberia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church, through its human rights and legal aid initiatives, remains committed to supporting efforts that promote justice, accountability, due process, and respect for human dignity.
