Monrovia- House of Representatives of the Republic of Liberia has reaffirmed its commitment to the One China Principle, aligning itself with United Nations Resolution 2758, which recognizes the Government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate representative of China at the United Nations.
Speaking on behalf of the House, the Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Hon. Nehker E. Gaye, said Liberia values its longstanding diplomatic relationship with China and appreciates the country’s continued support toward Liberia’s development agenda.
Hon. Gaye noted that the People’s Republic of China has remained a reliable partner to Liberia through several development initiatives and bilateral cooperation programs over the years.
According to him, China’s recent announcement of a Zero Trade Tariff policy for African Union member states marks a significant milestone that could strengthen trade relations between China and African countries while boosting economic cooperation across the continent.
The Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman also described the invitation extended to Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Madam Sara Beysolow-Nyanti, by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as a positive step in deepening Liberia-China relations.
He said the engagement comes at an important time as Liberia continues to serve on the United Nations Security Council, adding that the relationship between the two countries remains critical to Liberia’s diplomatic and economic interests.
Hon. Gaye further emphasized that China continues to contribute to Liberia’s development in key sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, education, and agriculture.
“The People’s Republic of China remains a trusted ally to Liberia, contributing significantly to national development and improving the lives of the Liberian people,” he stated.
The lawmaker disclosed that Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Richard Nagbe Koon, along with members of the House, remains committed to strengthening the longstanding ties between Liberia and China for the mutual benefit of both countries.
“Liberia values its historic relationship with the People’s Republic of China and deeply appreciates the continued support being provided through various development programs and cooperation agreements,” Hon. Gaye added.
He stressed that the Legislature fully supports Liberia’s foreign policy position regarding the One China Principle and remains committed to promoting constructive international partnerships.
The House of Representatives also reaffirmed its readiness to continue engaging international partners in advancing peace, development, economic cooperation, and diplomatic relations that serve Liberia’s national interests.
