MONROVIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has made the case for the prioritization of agriculture for economic growth and food security, urging members of his Cabinet to intensify efforts in promoting the agriculture sector, strengthening governance, and maintaining Liberia’s eligibility for the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact.
The initiatives, he said, are part of the government’s drive to advance the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.
The Liberian leader made the call when he opened the government’s 21st Cabinet Meeting in Monrovia.
He described agriculture as a critical pillar of Liberia’s economic growth and food security, urging ministers and senior government officials to take a more active role in supporting the sector.
The President said agriculture presents one of Liberia’s greatest opportunities for increasing income, improving nutrition, and reducing dependence on imported food. He noted that Liberians with access to land can contribute significantly to national production when provided with the necessary support and technical assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture.
Boakai encouraged Cabinet members to invest in farming activities and champion initiatives that support local producers, stressing that increased agricultural productivity is key to creating jobs, improving livelihoods, and strengthening the country’s economy.
The Liberian leader also underscored the importance of preserving the country’s eligibility for the Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact, warning that continued adherence to principles of good governance, transparency, and accountability remains essential for Liberia’s development aspirations.
According to President Boakai, every government official has a responsibility to contribute toward meeting the standards outlined in the MCC scorecard, emphasizing that progress in governance plays a significant role in attracting international investment and development assistance.
He noted that Liberia’s ability to secure future development opportunities depends largely on the government’s commitment to responsible leadership and institutional reforms.
The 21st Cabinet Meeting focused on agriculture, governance, accountability, and other key national priorities as the administration seeks to accelerate implementation of its development agenda and deliver tangible benefits to Liberians across the country.
