The Government of Liberia has announced that the rehabilitation of the country’s energy sector and the construction of roads will take precedence in the selection of projects under the second compact with the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).
Finance and Development Planning Minister, Augustine K. Ngafuan, said the two sectors are critical to unlocking economic growth, attracting large-scale investments, and creating employment opportunities across the country.
Minister Ngafuan made the disclosure over the weekend at the opening of a one-day roundtable discussion marking the official launch of the concept notes development process between the MCC and the Government of Liberia in Monrovia.
According to him, the launch represents a significant step toward designing actionable and impactful projects that will qualify for MCC funding. He emphasized that improving electricity access and road connectivity remains essential to boosting productivity and enhancing Liberia’s competitiveness.
The roundtable brought together government officials, development partners, and other stakeholders to deliberate on priority areas and ensure that proposed projects align with national development goals.
The MCC compact program is widely regarded as a key opportunity for Liberia to address longstanding infrastructure challenges, particularly in energy and transport—two sectors seen as vital to driving inclusive and sustainable economic development.
