Apparent damage control is adopted by the Secretary General of the Montserrado County chapter of the ruling Unity Party after issuing a public clarification following intense backlash over comments attributed to him during an appearance on Punch TV Live.
The controversy stemmed from a statement circulated on social media by Punch FM, which quoted the official as suggesting that many Unity Party partisans had not been appointed to government positions due to a lack of qualifications and expertise. The remark triggered widespread criticism among party supporters, particularly those who felt marginalized despite their contributions to the party’s electoral success.
In a statement released over the weekend, the Montserrado official distanced himself from the reported comment, asserting that it did not accurately reflect the full context of his remarks.
“Unity Party partisans across Liberia and in the diaspora, including our vibrant youth, are among the most educated, competent, qualified, committed, capable, and resilient citizens of our nation,” the statement noted, emphasizing respect for the contributions and sacrifices of party members.
He further stressed that he would never deliberately make statements that undermine or demean partisans, especially those currently facing unemployment.
Addressing the broader issue, the party official acknowledged that employment challenges among partisans mirror the wider economic situation in Liberia. He added that the Unity Party-led government is undertaking reforms aimed at creating inclusive growth and expanding opportunities for citizens.
While noting that the media publication may have lacked full context, the Secretary General expressed regret over the misunderstanding and extended an apology to those who felt offended.
To further clarify the situation, he announced plans to appear on the Punch FM Breakfast Show on Tuesday, May 5, at 8:00 a.m., where he is expected to address the issue and provide additional context to his earlier remarks.
