MONROVIA – The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Public Works and the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), has bragged of progress being made on several major infrastructure projects aimed at improving transportation, connectivity, and access to electricity across the country.
According to the Ministry of Public Works, significant progress has been made on the construction of a pedestrian bridge serving Grand Bassa University. The Ministry disclosed that Jupiter Construction Incorporated, operating under its supervision, has successfully completed low-load testing on the structure, which was fabricated in the People’s Republic of China.
The 225-foot-long and 3.5-meter-wide pedestrian bridge is expected to be shipped to Liberia immediately following the completion of testing. Government officials further indicated that the project is expected to be completed by November 2026. Procurement processes are also underway for the construction of the approach road linking the university campus to the bridge, ensuring full accessibility upon completion.
In a separate development, the Ministry of Public Works also announced the temporary reopening of the Sesto River Bridge in River Cess County. The decision, according to the Ministry, is intended to facilitate the movement of people, goods, and services during the Independence Day period and throughout the rainy season.
The Ministry explained that the temporary reopening will help ease transportation challenges and support commercial activities while rehabilitation works continue. It added that full reconstruction activities will resume during the dry season and urged motorists and the public to adhere to all traffic advisories and safety guidelines during the period.
Officials reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing permanent rehabilitation of the bridge as part of broader efforts to improve road infrastructure and enhance connectivity in River Cess County and surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, the Government of Liberia has also announced plans to commission a major rural electrification project in River Gee County on July 26, coinciding with Independence Day celebrations.
The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) said the project aligns with the government’s national electrification agenda and broader development priorities aimed at expanding access to reliable and affordable electricity across Liberia.
Phase One of the initiative includes the extension of electricity infrastructure from the CLSG substation corridor into Fish Town, installation of modern street lighting systems, and the connection of key public facilities such as schools, hospitals, police stations, places of worship, and businesses.
Government officials described the project as a major investment in rural development, expected to boost economic activity, improve public safety, and enhance living conditions in southeastern Liberia.
The government reiterated its commitment to infrastructure development as a key pillar of its national development agenda, emphasizing that ongoing investments in roads, bridges, and electricity are designed to improve livelihoods and strengthen economic growth across the country.
