The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) has issued a public clarification regarding an incident that occurred at Roberts International Airport (RIA) on June 27, 2026, reaffirming its commitment to international diplomatic protocols, airport security, and the protection of individual privacy.
According to the LAA, the individual seen in a widely circulated video was a foreign diplomat who was accorded the privileges and courtesies consistent with established international diplomatic protocols, Liberian law, and standard airport operating procedures.
The Authority explained that, under existing airport access procedures, authorized access passes are issued to designated personnel of accredited foreign diplomatic missions to facilitate the movement of diplomats through approved secure areas of the airport.
However, the LAA disclosed that it has launched an investigation into why the individual serving as the diplomat’s expediter during the incident did not possess the required airport access authorization. The Authority emphasized that if the investigation establishes any breach of airport regulations or applicable Liberian laws, appropriate administrative or legal action will be taken in accordance with LAA regulations and national legislation.
Additionally, the LAA reminded the public that all airport users are entitled to reasonable privacy protections while on airport premises. The Authority noted that the unauthorized photographing, video recording, or dissemination of images of individuals within restricted or operational areas of the airport is prohibited unless expressly permitted by law or authorized under LAA policies and procedures.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and accountability, the Liberia Airport Authority stated that it will continue to work closely with national security agencies and law enforcement authorities to safeguard the integrity of Liberia’s aviation system.
The Authority concluded by emphasizing that the safety, security, privacy, and well-being of passengers, visitors, employees, and all airport stakeholders remain its highest priority, as well as that of the Government of Liberia.
