MONROVIA–The Presidential Scholarship Recipients Inter-University Debate 2026 has officially commenced in Monrovia, bringing together scholarship beneficiaries from universities and colleges across Liberia for a two-day intellectual competition focused on research, critical thinking, public speaking, and civic engagement.
The debate, being held from August 13–14, is being conducted under the theme: “Empowering Youth Intellect, Driving National Development.”
The initiative provides young scholars with a platform to engage in constructive debates on issues of national importance while strengthening their analytical, communication, research, and leadership skills.
Speaking at the official launch, Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Samuel Stevquoah, challenged participants to conduct thorough research and understand opposing viewpoints before attempting to counter them.
“Remember, it’s about research. It’s about understanding the person’s position before you take it apart. Because if you don’t understand their position, you will not be able to effectively do so,” Minister Stevquoah emphasized.
The two-day event has also brought together representatives from various ministries, government agencies, and institutions, with several government officials delivering remarks and interacting with participating students.
Making special remarks, Education Minister Jarso Jallah encouraged the scholarship beneficiaries to take full advantage of the educational opportunities provided under the program.
“President Boakai has placed so much confidence in you. Don’t waste the opportunity,” Minister Jallah told the students.
Youth and Sports Minister Cornelia Kruah also expressed optimism about the participants’ performance, emphasizing the important role young people play in Liberia’s present and future development.
“Young people are no longer the future but the present, because everything affecting Liberia now has young people as a part of it,” Minister Kruah stated.
The debate is expected to expose the young scholars to diverse perspectives on governance, leadership, national development, and the role of young people in shaping Liberia’s future.
The initiative forms part of efforts under the Presidential Scholarship Program to develop the intellectual and leadership capacities of young Liberians.
The program has supported students across colleges and universities in Liberia, providing scholarship beneficiaries with opportunities not only to pursue higher education but also to develop skills beyond the classroom.
The Presidential Scholarship Recipients Inter-University Debate 2026 will continue through August 14, with participating institutions competing for individual and institutional honors.
The event is expected to culminate in the recognition of outstanding debaters who demonstrate excellence in research, argumentation, critical thinking, public speaking, and knowledge of national issues.
The initiative reinforces the message that investing in the intellect and leadership capacity of young people is an investment in Liberia’s long-term development.
