The Humanity Youth for Democracy and Revolutionary Action (HYDRA) has called on the Government of Liberia to provide greater transparency in the ongoing investigation into the reported US$19 million drug trafficking case at Roberts International Airport (RIA), arguing that the public has a constitutional and legal right to know the facts surrounding the matter.
In a press statement issued in Monrovia, the civil society organization said the investigation is not merely a matter of public speculation but a significant national issue that requires openness and accountability from the authorities.
HYDRA referenced Liberia’s Freedom of Information Act, describing it as an important legal framework that guarantees citizens access to public information. The organization, however, expressed concern that limited disclosures surrounding the investigation have raised questions about whether those principles are being fully respected.
According to the group, several key aspects of the investigation remain unclear, creating uncertainty and encouraging public speculation. HYDRA argued that timely and complete disclosure of relevant information is essential to maintaining public confidence in the justice system.
The organization is urging the Ministry of Justice and other relevant government institutions to make public all material facts related to the investigation while ensuring that due process is respected for everyone involved.
HYDRA also called on authorities to identify individuals and entities under investigation where appropriate, warning against the misuse of national security concerns as justification for withholding information that is in the public interest.
The group maintained that transparency and accountability are fundamental to democratic governance and said the handling of the high-profile drug case will serve as an important measure of the government’s commitment to the rule of law.
Describing the investigation as a critical test of public accountability, HYDRA emphasized that the outcome could significantly influence public confidence in Liberia’s institutions and anti-drug efforts.
The organization concluded by reaffirming its support for the Liberian people’s right to access information and called on the government to ensure that the investigation is conducted with openness, honesty, and full public disclosure.
