MONROVIA–The Ministry of Health (MOH), in partnership with key stakeholders, has launched the National Exercise and Wellness Day as part of efforts to promote physical activity, healthy lifestyles, and the prevention of non-communicable diseases across Liberia.
The inaugural exercise was held on Saturday, September 25, 2026, following President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr.’s proclamation declaring the last Saturday of every month as a national exercise day.
The initiative is expected to run from September 2026 through September 2027 and is intended to encourage individuals, communities, government institutions, civil society organizations, and development partners to make regular physical activity part of their daily lives.
The first observance began at about 6:00 a.m. with a public health parade from Catholic Junction to the Ministry of Health compound in Oldest Congo Town. The parade ended at approximately 8:00 a.m.
The exercise is part of broader public health efforts to address the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including hypertension, diabetes, and obesity.
According to Liberia’s 2022 STEPS Survey, 23.8 percent of adults between the ages of 18 and 69 had elevated blood pressure. The survey also found that 39.3 percent of adults were overweight, while 19.9 percent were obese.
Health authorities say regular physical activity can play an important role in reducing the risk of several NCDs and improving overall health and well-being.
The Ministry of Health is therefore calling on government institutions, communities, partners, civil society organizations, and members of the public to participate in the monthly exercise initiative.
The ministry said the program is intended not only to encourage exercise but also to increase public awareness about healthy living and the importance of preventing diseases associated with physical inactivity and unhealthy lifestyles.
The National Exercise and Wellness Day will be observed on the last Saturday of each month during the one-year period, providing an opportunity for people across Liberia to engage in physical activities and promote healthier communities.
The Ministry of Health is encouraging citizens to take ownership of the initiative by incorporating regular exercise and other healthy practices into their daily routines.
The ministry believes sustained participation in the program can contribute to increased awareness of NCD prevention and strengthen efforts to improve the overall health and wellness of the Liberian population.
