LUNGI, Sierra Leone – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. joined fellow West African leaders in a series of symbolic activities promoting regional unity and integration during the 69th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Lungi, Sierra Leone.
As part of the summit’s official opening on Sunday, July 19, President Boakai participated in the planting of the Tree of Regional Integration, a ceremony led by outgoing ECOWAS Chairman and Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio.
The Tree of Regional Integration represents the third pillar of the ECOWAS Vision 2050, which focuses on strengthening economic integration among member states. The initiative underscores the bloc’s commitment to expanding regional trade, improving connectivity, fostering shared prosperity, and promoting sustainable development across West Africa.
President Boakai also joined other Heads of State in signing the ECOWAS Unity Wall, a symbolic monument commemorating the summit and reaffirming member states’ commitment to regional cooperation, peace, democratic governance, and deeper integration.
According to ECOWAS, the Unity Wall serves as a lasting symbol of solidarity among member countries and their collective determination to build a more peaceful, stable, and prosperous region.
The symbolic ceremonies marked the opening of the 69th Ordinary Session, where regional leaders are meeting to discuss key issues, including peace and security, economic integration, infrastructure development, and institutional reforms aimed at strengthening the regional bloc.
President Boakai’s participation highlights Liberia’s continued commitment to regional cooperation and its support for initiatives designed to foster economic growth, stability, and sustainable development across West Africa. The Liberian leader has consistently emphasized that regional peace and integration are critical to the country’s long-term development and prosperity.
