MONROVIA-The proposed True United Party (TUP) has filed a writ of mandamus before the Supreme Court of Liberia, seeking to compel the National Elections Commission (NEC) to certify the party as a fully registered political party.
The party’s National Vice Chairman for Political Affairs, Majestu Wolokollie, said TUP has fulfilled all requirements set by the NEC since last year but has yet to receive its certificate to operate as a registered political party.
Speaking at a press conference held Thursday at the Temple of Justice in Monrovia, Wolokollie said the electoral body has neither issued the party its certificate nor provided a reason for the delay.
He argued that the NEC’s continued failure to act could deprive a significant number of Liberians who support the proposed party of the opportunity to participate in the country’s political process and pursue TUP’s vision for Liberia.
According to him, the decision to seek judicial intervention was prompted by the party’s belief that it has satisfied all legal and administrative requirements necessary for certification.
Wolokollie is calling on opposition political parties, civil society organizations and the general public to pay attention to what he described as the NEC’s attempt to prevent a segment of Liberian society from fully participating in the country’s political activities.
The proposed TUP is now asking the Supreme Court to compel the NEC to take action on its application and grant the party the certification it says it has qualified for.
