
Monrovic – The European Union Election Follow-up Mission on Wednesday held discussions with House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon on key electoral reform issues and democratic governance in Liberia.
The meeting took place at the Speaker’s office in the Capitol Building in Monrovia as part of a series of high-level engagements being conducted by the EU delegation with senior Liberian government officials and national stakeholders.
According to officials, the EU Election Follow-up Mission is engaging with several top government leaders, including President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., Foreign Affairs Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, and Senate President Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence.
Discussions during the meeting focused on the European Union’s continued support for Liberia’s electoral processes, democratic institutions, and electoral law reforms. Key issues highlighted included electoral redistricting based on population and representation, the status of the revised Elections Law, women’s participation in the Legislature, constitutional implications surrounding representation, and sustainable funding for elections.
The visiting delegation is headed by Manuel Sanchez Nogues, who serves as Team Leader and Electoral-Political Expert, along with Gilles Saphy. Other members of the delegation include Andrea Schieder, Zoltan Szalai, Manuel Sanchez, Marie Paule Neufville, and additional electoral experts supporting the mission.
Speaking during the engagement, Speaker Koon welcomed the EU delegation and reaffirmed the Legislature’s commitment to collaborating with international partners on electoral reform initiatives and democratic strengthening.
The Speaker also emphasized his support for increasing women’s participation in governance, noting that as a “He-for-She” advocate, he remains committed to supporting the Women’s Legislative Caucus of Liberia and promoting inclusive representation within the national Legislature.
Providing an update on the revised Elections Law, Speaker Koon disclosed that the House of Representatives has already passed the amended 2014 version of the legislation and subsequently forwarded it to the Liberian Senate for concurrence.
The meeting further highlighted the importance of continued cooperation between Liberia and international partners in strengthening democratic governance, promoting electoral integrity, and advancing inclusive political participation across the country.
