Two persons have lost their lives and several others sustained severe injuries in a serious car incident, this paper has gathered.
Our Maryland County reporter said the vehicle belongs to the Catholic Diocese of Cape Palmas which has expressed deep sorrow and concern about the fatal road accident. The vehicle in question was assigned to its Education Office, a statement issued said.
According to a statement issued by the Diocese on Tuesday, the accident occurred in the early hours of the morning in Salala, along the busy Gbarnga–Monrovia Highway. Preliminary reports indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to leave the roadway and crash.
Church authorities said two individuals are believed to have died as a result of the accident, while several others sustained injuries.
The identities of the deceased and injured had not been officially confirmed at the time of publication, except for the driver, who was identified as Mr. Thomas Wesseh.
The Diocese disclosed that Mr. Wesseh departed Harper on Monday, June 22, on an official trip to Monrovia. According to church officials, he had been instructed to spend the night at the Catholic Mission in Zwedru before continuing his journey the following day.
The Diocese also revealed that the driver had received explicit instructions not to transport passengers during the trip.
However, reports emerging after the crash suggest that the vehicle may have been carrying passengers, raising concerns among church authorities.
”The Diocese is therefore concerned about reports indicating that these instructions were not followed,” the statement noted.
Church officials said they are awaiting comprehensive reports from relevant government authorities and are cooperating fully with ongoing efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The incident has prompted calls for a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash, including whether traffic regulations and directives issued by the Diocese were violated.
Meanwhile, the Diocese extended condolences to the bereaved families and offered prayers for those receiving medical treatment.
”The Diocese of Cape Palmas prays for the souls of those who lost their lives and extends its condolences to their families. Our thoughts and prayers for their recovery are with those who sustained injuries,” the statement said.
Authorities are expected to conduct a full investigation into the tragedy as officials work to determine the factors that led to the crash and verify reports regarding the presence of unauthorized passengers in the vehicle.
The Diocese reaffirmed its commitment to cooperating with investigators as the search for answers continues.
