MONROVIA–Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Sr. has called on Liberians to rise above political, tribal and religious differences and unite in building a peaceful, prosperous and inclusive nation, stressing that Liberia’s future depends on the collective efforts of all its citizens.
Delivering the keynote address at the 16th Edition of the Golden Image Awards held Tuesday at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Monrovia, Vice President Koung said national development cannot be achieved by government alone, but requires the participation of every Liberian regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity or generation.
“The Liberia we seek cannot be built by government alone. It cannot be built by one political party, one county, one tribe, one religion, or one generation. It can only be built when all Liberians see themselves as stakeholders in our nation’s future,” the Vice President declared.
He cautioned that while differing opinions are essential in a democratic society, political disagreements should never degenerate into hatred, insults, misinformation or division, warning that such actions undermine national progress.
The Vice President urged Liberians to embrace reconciliation, dialogue and trust, calling for a shift from “the politics of bitterness” to “the politics of ideas” as the country continues its democratic journey.
Addressing Liberia’s youth, Koung described them as active partners in national development rather than simply the leaders of tomorrow. He encouraged young people to harness their creativity, innovation and courage to contribute meaningfully to the country’s growth.
Speaking on Liberia’s development prospects, the Vice President said the country remains well-positioned for economic transformation because of its abundant natural resources, fertile agricultural land, vast forests, strategic maritime location and youthful population.
He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for investment, expanding infrastructure, strengthening agriculture, increasing access to energy, promoting private sector growth, supporting manufacturing and creating decent employment opportunities for Liberians.
Koung emphasized that peace remains the cornerstone of sustainable development, noting that without peace there can be no lasting prosperity and without unity there can be no meaningful national progress.
Reflecting on the significance of the Golden Image Awards, the Vice President praised Ambassador Juli Endee and the organizers for sustaining the initiative over the past sixteen years, describing it as a respected national platform that celebrates excellence, patriotism, leadership and outstanding service.
According to him, the award recipients represent what is possible when determination meets purpose and serve as role models whose achievements should inspire young Liberians to pursue excellence through dedication and integrity.
As Liberia marks another anniversary of its independence, Koung urged citizens to leave a legacy of unity, hope and service, expressing optimism that future generations would remember today’s Liberians as a people who placed national interest above political differences and transformed the country through courage, action and collective responsibility.
He concluded by praying for God’s continued blessings upon Liberia and its people, while calling for wisdom, compassion and unity to build the peaceful and prosperous nation all Liberians aspire to achieve.
