MONROVIA – The management of the Liberia office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is facing serious accusation of deploying armed police officers at examination centers.
It has however dismissed the accusation as false.
Refresh Liberia, an online news outlet, had alleged that candidates at a WAEC examination center were being supervised by heavily armed police officers.
WAEC, in a statement issued Tuesday, described the June 1 facebook post as fake and intended to damage the reputation of both the Council and the Liberia National Police.
According to WAEC, the post featured an image purportedly showing an examination center where candidates were being monitored by several heavily armed police officers during the administration of examinations.
However, the Council said preliminary findings indicate that the image was generated using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and does not depict an actual examination environment in Liberia.
“It has been 93 percent established that the image was created by AI,” the Secretariat stated.
WAEC further clarified that the Liberia National Police has never deployed heavily armed officers to any of its examination centers across the country. The Council noted that police presence at examination sites is typically limited and intended solely to maintain order and security.
“The Secretariat wants to state categorically that at no time has the Liberia National Police deployed more than one police officer at any of our examination centers, least to mention them being heavily armed as indicated in the post published by Refresh Liberia,” the statement emphasized.
The Council expressed concern that the publication could mislead the public and undermine confidence in the integrity of the examination process.
