A 56-year-old woman identified as Mary Giah has pleaded guilty in open court to the alleged murder of her three grandchildren in Mehnla Town, District #9, Nimba County.
The case, which has drawn public attention in the county, involves the deaths of three children identified as Mewaseh Giah, Marvelous Zainsaye, age 4, and Alvina Tokpah, age 2.
According to court records, the children were reportedly killed on February 22, 2026, in Mehnla Town.
Despite the defendant’s guilty plea, Resident Judge Serena F. Garlawolu set aside the plea and entered a “not guilty” plea on behalf of the accused, in keeping with Liberian legal procedures governing capital offenses.
The judge subsequently ordered state prosecutors to proceed with the presentation of witnesses and evidence before the court to establish the facts surrounding the case.
Under Liberian law, murder cases classified as capital offenses require full judicial proceedings regardless of a defendant’s admission of guilt.
The matter is expected to proceed to trial on May 19, 2026, at the 8th Judicial Circuit Court after the Grand Jury returned a True Bill against the defendant for murder.
Court authorities are expected to hear testimony and evidence as the prosecution seeks to prove the allegations against the accused.
