MONROVIA – Adult Literacy Program modernization is being considered by the Liberian government as the Ministry of Education launched a nationwide review of the adult literacy curriculum as part of efforts to strengthen lifelong learning and improve access to education for adults across the country.
The initiative brought together education partners, literacy service providers, and key stakeholders in Monrovia to assess existing programs and align them with national development priorities.
Opening the session, Education Minister Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah commended organizations, communities, and facilitators who have sustained adult literacy programs over the years, especially during periods when government-run centers experienced setbacks.
She stressed the importance of a coordinated national system that ensures adult learners benefit from a standardized curriculum and consistent learning outcomes across all counties.
Discussions at the review session focused on broadening the adult literacy curriculum beyond basic reading, writing, and numeracy.
Stakeholders proposed the inclusion of practical life skills such as digital literacy, financial management, health education, entrepreneurship, and civic awareness to better equip learners for modern challenges.
Participants noted that such reforms would make adult education more relevant to everyday life and responsive to Liberia’s evolving social and economic environment.
The Ministry of Education emphasized that the updated curriculum is expected to create stronger pathways for adult learners to transition into vocational training, further education, and employment opportunities.
Stakeholders agreed that improving adult literacy is not only an educational priority but also a key driver of economic empowerment and community development.
The Ministry of Education described the curriculum review as part of broader reforms aimed at improving the quality and accessibility of education in Liberia.
The outcomes of the process are expected to guide future adult education policy and strengthen nationwide literacy programming.
