The famous Providence Island is set for reimaging as President Joseph Nyumah Boakai at the weekend broke ground for its remodeling and development, describing the historic site as a significant symbol of Liberia’s origins and an important gateway for showcasing the country’s history to the world.
President Boakai said Providence Island represents “the beginning of our history in a very concrete way,” emphasizing that the government’s decision to develop the site is aimed at adding value to Liberia’s historical heritage while making it more accessible and meaningful to both Liberians and international visitors.
The President said the development of the island is not about replacing or diminishing its historical character, but rather about unveiling its importance and creating an avenue through which the world can better understand Liberia’s history.
“What we believe is that we’re trying to unveil what Providence means to Liberia,” President Boakai said, stressing that the project is intended to open Liberia further to the international community.
He noted that despite Liberia’s rich historical heritage, many people around the world remain unaware of the country’s historical significance. According to him, the development of Providence Island will help address that gap by transforming the site into a place where Liberia’s history can be experienced and appreciated.
The President further stressed that the project marks a new chapter in the preservation and promotion of Liberia’s historical identity, saying the island would become a visible representation of the beginning of the nation’s history.
“People don’t know that we have the richest history in Africa and this is what we’re trying to do,” he said.
President Boakai said the groundbreaking ceremony has now made clear the government’s intention to transform Providence Island into a major historical and tourism destination.
He assured that his administration remains committed to supporting the project, noting that the government is providing resources to ensure the development becomes a reality.
“Our government is very supportive, we provide resources,” the President said, adding that the project provides an important opportunity to make Liberia’s history better known beyond its borders.
The remodeling and development of Providence Island is expected to strengthen efforts to preserve Liberia’s historical heritage while creating a platform for tourism, education and greater international awareness of the country’s history.
President Boakai said the project ultimately seeks to ensure that Providence Island is recognized not only as a historic location, but as a significant place marking the beginning of Liberia’s history and a destination through which the country can tell its story to the world.
