MONROVIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. has returned to Liberia following his participation in a two-day High-Level Consultative Conference on Reparatory Justice held in Accra, Ghana, where African leaders and international stakeholders gathered to advance discussions on addressing the legacy of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade.
The conference, hosted by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, focused on promoting global efforts toward reparatory justice, supporting the implementation of a United Nations resolution on the issue, and strengthening international cooperation aimed at healing historical wounds and advancing sustainable development for people of African descent.
Speaking upon his arrival at Roberts International Airport on Saturday evening, President Boakai described Liberia’s appointment to the Advisory Council for International Reparatory Justice as a significant opportunity for the country to contribute to global conversations on justice, reconciliation, and development.
According to the Liberian leader, Liberia’s experience in peace-building, post-war recovery, and national reconciliation places the country in a unique position to share valuable lessons with the international community while supporting Africa’s call for restorative justice.
President Boakai noted that Liberia’s current status as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council further strengthens its ability to participate in discussions that seek to expand educational opportunities, promote development, and create a better future for Africans and people of African descent worldwide.
He emphasized that the conference discussions focused on restoration, remembrance, and reconciliation, stressing that the objective was not to dwell on historical divisions but to acknowledge past injustices and build a path toward a more equitable future.
The President further stated that Liberia’s democratic renewal and reconciliation journey offer important insights that can assist broader continental efforts aimed at preserving historical memory, fostering unity, and advancing justice across Africa.
The Accra conference brought together heads of state, policymakers, scholars, and international partners committed to advancing reparatory justice initiatives and strengthening cooperation on issues affecting people of African descent globally.
