FORMER VICE PRESIDENT JEWEL HOWARD TAYLOR TAKEN TO MONROVIA CENTRAL PRISON AS DRUG TRAFFICKING AND MONEY LAUNDERING CASE MOVES TO COURT

- MONROVIA, LIBERIA — Former Liberian Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor is expected to spend Tuesday night at the Monrovia Central Prison following her appearance before the Monrovia City Court on Tuesday, August 25, in connection with allegations of drug trafficking and money laundering.
Madam Taylor was taken into custody after appearing before Judge Ben Barco of the Monrovia City Court, following the filing of two separate motions by her legal team.
During Tuesday’s proceedings, lawyers representing Madam Taylor requested the court to grant her compassionate leave from detention on health grounds and allow her to seek medical attention while attending court proceedings.
However, Judge Barco denied the defense request for compassionate leave.
The court’s decision means Madam Taylor will remain in detention as the case proceeds through the judicial system.
Judge Barco, however, granted a motion filed by Madam Taylor’s lawyers seeking a preliminary hearing to examine the evidence the state has against the former Vice President.
The ruling clears the way for the defense to challenge the prosecution’s case and for the court to consider the evidence and allegations presented by the state.
Following the proceedings, Madam Taylor was escorted from the court and taken to the Monrovia Central Prison, where she is expected to remain in custody pending further court action.
