The opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) has disclosed that it intends to engage the international community over what it describes as the alleged targeting of its officials by the Unity Party-led government.
Speaking during an interview on Prime FM’s Nighttime Heat on Thursday, Secretary General Jefferson T. Koijee accused the administration of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai of undermining the Constitution and creating political tension through what he described as actions against members of the former ruling party.
According to Koijee, the CDC believes the current administration is governing in a manner inconsistent with democratic principles. He alleged that the government is acting as though it came to power through means other than a democratic election, adding that the country’s political environment has become increasingly tense.
Koijee further maintained that the CDC peacefully transferred power following the 2023 elections despite the closely contested results, arguing that the party chose to preserve Liberia’s peace and stability rather than pursue actions that could have destabilized the country.
Commenting on the legal situation involving former Finance Minister Samuel Tweah, Koijee insisted that Tweah remains a free citizen and warned against what he characterized as attempts to intimidate or target him. He said the CDC would provide maximum support and protection to its former official while pledging what he described as democratic resistance to any further actions against him.
The CDC Secretary General also disclosed that the party is exploring international avenues to raise concerns over what it considers politically motivated actions by the Unity Party-led government. He said the party intends to engage international partners and institutions in pursuit of what it believes is accountability and respect for democratic principles.
Koijee also addressed reports concerning former Chief of Protocol Nora Finda Bondoo, reaffirming that she remains an active member of the Congress for Democratic Change. He said the party continues to stand behind her and would strongly oppose any efforts to damage her reputation.
The government has not publicly responded to Koijee’s latest allegations. The comments come amid heightened political debate surrounding ongoing legal proceedings involving former government officials and other issues that have drawn national attention.
