The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), in collaboration with the Liberia National Police (LNP), the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), and the Pleebo City Corporation, on Wednesday launched a citywide cleanup campaign in Pleebo as part of activities leading to the observance of World Drug Day 2026.
More than 20 officers drawn from the various security institutions participated in the exercise, which focused on cleaning major streets and public areas across the city.
Organizers said the initiative was intended not only to improve sanitation but also to promote community involvement in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking.
Speaking following the cleanup, Pleebo City Mayor Larry Geekor praised the effort and emphasized the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment while addressing social issues such as substance abuse.
Mayor Geekor reaffirmed the city’s commitment to supporting programs aimed at educating young people and strengthening public awareness about the harmful effects of drugs.
Also addressing participants, LDEA Maryland County Chief of Operations, Special Agent John Williams McGee, described the cleanup as the official opening activity for this year’s World Drug Day observance in the county.
According to Agent McGee, a series of events have been planned to mark the occasion, including a football match designed to engage young people and promote anti-drug messages.
He further disclosed that authorities will conduct a public destruction of narcotics and other illicit substances confiscated by the LDEA between June 2025 and June 2026.
”The fight against drugs requires the involvement of everyone in the community,” McGee said, urging residents to support law enforcement efforts by reporting drug-related activities and encouraging young people to stay away from substance abuse.
World Drug Day, officially known as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, is observed every year on June 26.
The day serves as a global platform to raise awareness about the dangers posed by illegal drugs and to encourage collective action against drug abuse and trafficking.
Officials said this year’s activities in Maryland County are expected to bring together community leaders, youth groups, security agencies, and residents in a united effort to promote safer and healthier communities.
