MONROVIA – A major strategic meeting aimed at advancing the proposed SP2 Hydropower Project was held on Monday at the headquarters of the Liberia Electricity Corporation in Waterside, Monrovia, bringing together officials from the corporation, the World Bank, and the Ministry of Mines and Energy of Liberia.
The high-level engagement focused on the development and implementation roadmap for the SP2 Hydropower Plant, an ambitious energy project expected to generate approximately 250 megawatts of electricity for Liberia.
According to officials, the proposed hydropower facility is expected to be constructed upstream of the St. Paul River in Fumah District, Bong County, as part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s electricity sector and improve access to reliable power.
During the meeting, technical presentations were delivered by the World Bank team outlining key phases of the project, including technical design, implementation strategies, environmental and social impact considerations, as well as long-term infrastructure planning.
Officials described the SP2 Hydropower Project as a major step toward achieving Liberia’s energy security and supporting industrial and economic growth.
Once completed, the project is expected to significantly increase the country’s electricity generation capacity, improve reliability in power supply, and help meet Liberia’s growing energy demands.
Participants at the meeting also reaffirmed the commitment of the Liberian government, through the Liberia Electricity Corporation and the Ministry of Mines and Energy, to work closely with international development partners to expand access to affordable and sustainable electricity across the country.
The SP2 Hydropower Project is widely regarded as one of Liberia’s most ambitious future energy initiatives and is expected to play a major role in supporting the country’s long-term development agenda.
