CAPE MOUNT –In a cheering display of love and dedication, Liberian journalist James M. Karimu has undertaken a remarkable project: building and officially dedicating a modern home for his 67-year-old mother, Messic S. Karimu. This inspiring story has captured the attention of the community, showcasing not only the bond between a parent and child but also the importance of adapting to the changing needs of aging family members.
A DREAM REALIZED
Born and bred in the Leprosy Colony of Massatin located in Darblo Clan of Gola Konneh District, Liberian Journalist James Karimu, as a child was compelled to flee from home with his parents like any other Liberians during the heat of the country’s civil unrest. But that did not define the future his envisage for parents. Running through the thicks and thins, Journalist Karimu obtained His first degree from the state-run University while chasing the news in the mainstream media in Liberia.
After years of covering local news and stories that enlightened community spirit in the mainstream media, Mr. Karimu finally chose to integrate into the corporate sector especially when the opportunity came but with one thing in mind, creating a comfortable and accessible living space for his mother.
“My mom, Messic S. Karimu has always been my biggest supporter, and it was time for me to give back,” Journalist Karimu told the gathering at the weekend during the official opening of His mom’s home in Massatin
At the weekend, Journalist Karimu officially dedicated and turned over the keys of the house to His mother thanking her for all she continues to do for him. He used the occasion to encourage others to envisage providing comfortable homes for their aging parents.
“Today, I want to officially turn these keys over to you, Mother. This is your home. You deserve more. But please accept this as a little gift from my heart, on behalf of my wife and I. I want to also encourage other young men and women; you can do the same. You can even do better than this. But I think all parents deserve the best care from us, as children. Let’s change the narratives.” Journalist Karimu
At the dedication, a sacrifice was made in line with tradition which was followed by a Qur’anic reading. The ceremony brought together elders, the Christian and Muslim communities, Imams, women, youths and children.
For all of us, it raises a crucial question: What can we do today to improve the lives of those we care about as they age?
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF MASSATINE COLONY
The Massatine Leprosy Colony is an isolated community situated in the Darblo Clan of Gola Konneh District, Grand Cape Mount County, Liberia. Primarily established as a place of refuge and quarantine for individuals affected by Hansen’s disease. This remote settlement has grappled with significant hardship, limited infrastructure, and prolonged neglect since the end of the Liberian civil war.
