Monrovia-Montserrado County District #3 Representative Sumo Mulbah has criticized some members of the House of Representatives, claiming that many lawmakers do not fully understand the national budget but continue to speak about it.
Speaking on Voice of Liberia on Wednesday, Representative Mulbah expressed concern about what he described as a lack of understanding of the budget among some members of the Legislature.
“Many of the representatives do not understand the budget; they just talk,” Mulbah stated.
His remarks raise questions about lawmakers’ understanding of the national budget and their role in reviewing government spending priorities.
The national budget outlines the government’s projected revenue and planned expenditures for a fiscal year. Members of the Legislature are responsible for reviewing and approving the budget, making their understanding of its provisions important to the oversight of public resources.
Lawmakers are also expected to examine government spending proposals, assess national development priorities, and ensure that public funds are allocated in accordance with the country’s needs.
However, Mulbah did not identify the specific representatives he was referring to or provide examples of what he considered a lack of understanding of the budget in the remarks provided.
It was also unclear whether his criticism was directed at discussions surrounding the current national budget or the broader budgetary process.
