MONROVIA – As Liberia firmly awaits a conclusive outcome from the under-investigation RIA $19.2 million dollars cocaine seizure, two lawmakers have made their position known, insisting that several more critical questions remain unanswered, while also calling for independent, impartial, and transparent investigation into the matte.
Senators Edwin Snowe ofr Bomi County and Amara Konneh of Gbarpolu County have said the incident demands full accountability and legislative oversight.
In a statement released following Senate proceedings, the lawmakers disclosed that they had formally submitted a letter to the Senate Plenary requesting a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding what has been described as Liberia’s largest cocaine seizure.
While commending the Joint Security Task Force and the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) for intercepting the illicit shipment, the senators argued that several critical questions remain unanswered, particularly regarding how such a significant quantity of cocaine entered the country and allegedly passed through airport security and VIP channels before being intercepted.
The lawmakers stressed that Liberia’s international reputation and national security require a thorough inquiry capable of exposing all financiers, facilitators, and any internal accomplices connected to the operation. They urged the Senate to exercise its oversight responsibility by supporting an independent investigation that would uncover the full facts surrounding the case and ensure that all individuals and institutions found culpable are held accountable under the law.
According to the statement, the senators also expressed appreciation to the President Pro Tempore and members of the Senate for giving the matter urgent consideration during Plenary and for voting to summon the Joint Security Task Force to appear before the full Senate to provide answers regarding the drug seizure.
They noted that the robust debate and broad support from fellow senators demonstrated that the fight against illicit drugs transcends political affiliations and requires a united national response.
The lawmakers further emphasized that Liberians are closely monitoring the handling of the case, noting that the public expects transparency and accountability from the country’s leadership. They warned that the nation cannot afford to allow organized drug trafficking networks to operate unchecked and called for decisive action to dismantle criminal cartels and strengthen Liberia’s fight against transnational crime.
The senators concluded by encouraging the public to review the full letter submitted to the Senate Plenary, reiterating their commitment to ensuring that justice is served and that those responsible are brought before the law.
