Monrovia-The Liberia National Police (LNP) has arrested several individuals accused of operating a scam scheme in which people were allegedly promised overseas employment and travel opportunities.
The arrests followed a raid on a location along 72nd Boulevard in Paynesville, where police reportedly discovered a number of people who said they had been brought to Liberia under false promises of traveling to Canada and other countries.
According to information provided by the victims, they were allegedly asked to pay between US$900 and US$1,500 for arrangements to travel to Canada, Europe and parts of Asia in search of employment opportunities.
The victims reportedly said they were promised assistance with travel and employment but later found themselves stranded in Liberia.
Authorities are reportedly investigating the circumstances surrounding the operation and the individuals arrested in connection with the allegations.
Preliminary information indicates that approximately 200 people from Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Liberia may have been affected by the alleged scheme.
Some of those allegedly involved in the operation reportedly managed to escape during the police raid, while others were taken into custody.
The exact number of people arrested and the identities of the suspects had not been officially disclosed at the time of reporting.
The police are expected to continue questioning the suspects and victims as investigators work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
Several of the alleged victims reportedly told authorities that they paid significant amounts of money after being promised opportunities to travel abroad for work.
The amounts reportedly ranged from US$900 to US$1,500 per person, depending on the promised destination and arrangement.
The victims’ accounts have raised concerns about possible fraud and human trafficking, although the allegations remain subject to investigation.
The police are expected to determine whether the suspects will face charges related to fraud, trafficking in persons, kidnapping or other offenses based on the findings of the investigation.
The mass arrests and raid on 72nd Boulevard have drawn attention to the growing concerns surrounding fraudulent overseas employment and travel schemes.
Authorities are urging members of the public to exercise caution when approached with offers to secure foreign employment or travel opportunities in exchange for large sums of money.
The LNP has not yet provided a full account of the investigation, including the identities of the suspects, the number of confirmed victims and the specific charges being considered.
Further details are expected as the investigation continues.
