MONROVIA–The ruling Unity Party (UP) continues to come under sustained attack from opposition figures and other critics in society over the government’s handling of former vice president Jewel Howard Taylor who is behind bar at the Monrovia Central Prison awaiting court trial.
One of its toughest critics, Movement for Progressive Change (MPC) Political Leader, Simeon Freeman, slammed it as the most dangerous party in the country’s political architecture.
His remarks are a sharp criticism of the administration over the arrest and prosecution of the former vice president, suggesting that the case could amount to a political witch hunt.
Freeman who spoke Monday on a local radio talk show, questioned the government’s handling of the case against Howard-Taylor while threw a challenge to the administration to demonstrate that the law is being applied consistently, particularly in cases involving alleged narcotics offenses.
He also questioned whether the evidence publicly presented by authorities so far is sufficient to substantiate the allegations against Howard-Taylor.
The MPC leader’s comments come amid growing national concern over Liberia’s drug-trafficking problem and intensified scrutiny of the government’s response to major narcotics cases. Liberia has in recent months witnessed several high-profile drug investigations and seizures, prompting calls for stronger enforcement and greater transparency from law enforcement authorities.
Freeman argued that the government’s handling of the Howard-Taylor case should be assessed alongside its treatment of other major narcotics cases. He suggested that perceived differences in how suspects are investigated, arrested and prosecuted could undermine public confidence in the justice system.
The criticism adds a political dimension to an already sensitive case, as the government faces mounting pressure to demonstrate that its anti-drug campaign is being pursued fairly and without political interference. The administration has yet to publicly respond to Freeman’s latest allegations.
