The Monrovia District Conference of the Liberia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church (LAC/UMC) has honored former River Gee County Senator Comany A. Wesseh as its Father of the Year in recognition of his exemplary Christian fatherhood, leadership, and dedicated service to both the Church and the nation.
The recognition ceremony was held at Stephen Trowen Nagbe United Methodist Church in Sinkor under the auspices of the Conference United Methodist Men Organization, Monrovia District Conference of the Liberia Annual Conference and brought together members of the United Methodist Men and Women organizations, fathers honored from local churches across the Monrovia District Conference, clergy, government officials, and distinguished guests.
Among those in attendance were Bishop Samuel J. Quire Jr., Resident Bishop of the Liberia Episcopal Area of The United Methodist Church; Mother Richlian N. K. Quire; Rev. Charles Eddie Lagama, Superintendent of the Monrovia District Conference; Alexander B. Cummings, Political Leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC); Dr. Togba-Nah Tipoteh; former First Lady Comfort Freeman Sawyer; Cllr. Ruth Jappy and Cllr. Samuel Zanoe, Conference Chancellors of the LAC/UMC; Rev. Dr. George K. Wheagba, Vice President for Administration of the United Methodist University; Rev. Dr. Anthony G. Dio, Vice President for Academic Affairs; Prof. John D. Kimber; Rev. George K. Monbo; Rev. Paul K. Gartor; Father Moses O. Kollie, Conference Treasurer; Rev. Dr. Momo Kpan, retired clergy; Associate Justice Jamestta H. Wolokollie of the Supreme Court of Liberia; and Cllr. Meda A. Wesseh, wife of the honoree, along with numerous clergy, church leaders, family members, and well-wishers.
Delivering the sermon on the theme, “Quality of a Good Father,” based on 2 Corinthians 5:17–21, Atty. Rev. Bartholomew Bioh Colley, retired pastor of the Lutheran Church in Liberia, emphasized that a good father is measured not by material possessions but by the godly example he leaves for his children.
“God calls every father to be an ambassador of Christ—leading his home with love, forgiveness, and righteousness. If you cannot stand for anything, you will stand for everything, and when you do, you stand for nothing,” Rev. Colley declared.
He stressed that genuine fatherhood is reflected through integrity, faithfulness, and unwavering commitment to God’s calling, encouraging fathers to continue trusting God despite risks and suffering.
Rev. Colley also paid tribute to Father Wesseh’s role during Liberia’s civil conflict, noting that he was actively involved in peace negotiations that helped end fourteen years of civil war.
“Father Wesseh was not only engaged but actively involved in the negotiations that brought peace to our country after fourteen years of bloodshed. Thank you, Father Wesseh,” he said.
He further reminded the congregation that while children may eventually forget what their fathers say, they will always remember the lives they lived before them.
“Children may forget what a father says, but they will always remember the life he lives before them. Be slaves to righteousness and not slaves to sin, for the wages of sin is death,” Rev. Colley added.
He urged fathers to leave behind not merely material wealth but a lasting legacy of faith, integrity, and reconciliation with God.
Speaking on behalf of the Monrovia District Conference United Methodist Men Organization, President Father Gareson Bailey expressed gratitude for the gathering and congratulated Father Wesseh on receiving the district’s highest Father’s Day recognition.
For his part, Bishop Samuel J. Quire Jr. praised the guest preacher for faithfully proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ and congratulated Father Wesseh for his exemplary leadership and steadfast commitment to the ministries and mission of the Liberia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.
“I am overwhelmingly impressed by the large number of attendees gathered here today at Stephen Trowen Nagbe United Methodist Church,” Bishop Quire remarked.
A commemorative plaque was presented to Father Wesseh in recognition of his faithful service to God and humanity.
Responding to the honor, Father Wesseh reflected on the longstanding partnership between the Lutheran and United Methodist Churches, especially their advocacy for peace during Liberia’s civil war. He commended Bishop Quire for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to advancing God’s Kingdom and making disciples of Jesus Christ.
Father Wesseh also cautioned against misinformation and falsehoods that have negatively affected the Church.
“Lies can do great damage. Our Church has traveled a rocky road because of lies. People have falsely accused our denomination regarding same-sex marriage. Marriage is between a man, a woman, and the state; the Church simply witnesses the ceremony,” he said.
He further praised Associate Justice Jamestta H. Wolokollie for her professionalism, integrity, and distinguished service to Liberia.
The ceremony concluded with prayers, tributes, and words of encouragement as attendees celebrated Father Comany A. Wesseh’s well-deserved recognition and challenged fathers throughout the Church to remain faithful spiritual leaders and godly examples in their homes, congregations, and communities.
