Residents of Killepo Chiefdom in Chedepo Administrative District are celebrating a major improvement in healthcare following the official commissioning and handover of the newly constructed Killepo Primary Healthcare Clinic.
The facility, inaugurated on Thursday, July 23, is expected to improve access to quality healthcare for thousands of people in Killepo Chiefdom and neighboring communities, replacing a long-serving self-help clinic with a modern health center equipped to meet growing medical needs.
The project was implemented by the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Health and the River Gee County Health Team, with support from the German Humanitarian organization Welthungerhilfe (WHH). Funding was provided by the German Government through KfW Development Bank.
Designed to enhance healthcare delivery in one of the county’s rural communities, the clinic includes solar-powered electricity, improved water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities, and upgraded consultation and treatment rooms to support quality patient care.
Speaking during the dedication ceremony, River Gee County Health Officer Dr. Pauline Weah Mehdeh described the project as a significant investment in the county’s healthcare system.
She thanked the Government of Liberia, the Ministry of Health, the German Government, WHH, and residents of Killepo Chiefdom for their collaboration in making the project possible.
According to Dr. Mehdeh, the new facility not only restores healthcare services but also strengthens the clinic’s capacity to provide reliable and resilient medical care for years to come.
River Gee County Superintendent Mike Tarpeh Swengbe praised the government’s development partners for supporting the health sector and called on residents to safeguard the facility.
He stressed that maintaining the clinic is a shared responsibility that will ensure future generations continue to benefit from improved healthcare services.
Community members welcomed the new clinic with excitement, describing it as a long-awaited development that will improve healthcare and reduce the challenges of accessing medical treatment.
Speaking on behalf of the women of Killepo Chiefdom, 68-year-old Betty Koffa said the clinic is the first major government development project the community has received since it was established.
She thanked the Government of Liberia and its partners and assured authorities that residents would take ownership of the facility and protect it.
Community elder David Tweh echoed similar sentiments, promising that the people of Killepo would work together to properly maintain the clinic for the benefit of everyone.
County health authorities disclosed that River Gee currently operates 22 health facilities, including Fish-Town Referral Hospital, two comprehensive health centers, and several clinics across the county.
Officials said the completion of the Killepo Primary Healthcare Clinic further strengthens the county’s health network by expanding access to essential medical services in Chedepo Administrative District and nearby communities.
The inauguration began with a traditional kola nut ceremony at the Killepo Kanweaken Town Hall, bringing together county health officials, local government authorities, traditional leaders, women, youth, elders, and residents.
Founded in 1962, Welthungerhilfe is one of Germany’s largest independent humanitarian organizations. Through its partnership with the Government of Liberia, the organization continues to support initiatives in healthcare, nutrition, water, sanitation, and community resilience across the country.
