MONROVIA–MONROVIA–The National Elections Commission (NEC) has launched a three-day technical consultation to review the findings of an Institutional Capacity Assessment aimed at strengthening the Commission’s effectiveness, resilience, and long-term sustainability.
The consultation, which began Monday at the NEC Headquarters in Monrovia, seeks to develop a practical implementation roadmap that will guide institutional reforms and enhance the Commission’s readiness to conduct credible, transparent, and inclusive elections.
Officially opening the consultation, NEC Chairperson Jonathan K. Weedor described the Institutional Capacity Assessment as a significant milestone in the Commission’s ongoing efforts to build a stronger electoral management body.
According to Chairperson Weedor, the assessment provides an opportunity for the Commission to identify its strengths while objectively examining areas that require improvement.
“The assessment enables us to recognize our strengths and objectively assess areas that require enhancement,” Weedor said, adding that the findings and recommendations will serve as the foundation for reforms aimed at making the Commission more efficient, accountable, and prepared for future electoral processes.
The consultation is being implemented under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Liberia Electoral Support Project (LESP) with financial support from the European Union, the Embassy of Sweden in Liberia, and Irish Aid.
The exercise brings together NEC senior management and key stakeholders to review critical aspects of the Commission’s operations and develop a results-oriented roadmap for institutional reform.
The discussions are being coordinated by Katherine Green, Chief Technical Advisor of UNDP-LESP, while Lead Consultant Dala Korkoya Jr. is presenting the findings of the Institutional Capacity Assessment and facilitating technical sessions to help shape the implementation roadmap.
According to organizers, the roadmap will provide strategic direction for improving the Commission’s operational effectiveness, institutional accountability, and preparedness for future elections.
The consultation reflects the continued collaboration between the NEC, UNDP-LESP, and international development partners to strengthen Liberia’s electoral institutions and support democratic governance through sustainable institutional reforms.
