The Joint Public Accounts, Audit and Expenditure Committee of the Liberian Legislature has launched a series of public hearings to review reports issued by the Auditor General, reinforcing its oversight role in promoting transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.
The hearings bring together representatives of government institutions and other stakeholders to respond to audit findings and recommendations contained in the Auditor General’s reports.
Among the key matters under review is a compliance audit of the contractual agreement between the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC) and Bea Mountain Mining Corporation (BMMC), covering the period from February 1, 2022, to July 31, 2024.
The committee is also examining a compliance audit of the Ministry of Agriculture for the period June 2019 through December 2021, in addition to a financial statement audit of the Ministry of Youth and Sports covering the fiscal years ending June 30, 2018, 2019, and 2020.
Speaking at the opening of the hearings, committee members said the process is designed to give the institutions involved a fair opportunity to explain the issues raised in the audit reports and respond to the recommendations made by the Auditor General. They noted that all witnesses are expected to provide truthful testimony and submit relevant documents to support their responses.
According to the committee, the public hearings are part of the Legislature’s constitutional responsibility to exercise oversight over public institutions and ensure that government funds and other public resources are managed in a transparent, accountable, and efficient manner.
The committee added that the outcome of the hearings will help inform future legislative actions aimed at strengthening public financial management and improving accountability across government institutions.
