Resident Bishop of the Liberia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church, Bishop Samuel J. Quire Jr., has called on Liberians to embrace gratitude, national unity, justice, and a renewed commitment to God as the nation commemorates its 179th Independence Day.
Speaking during the National Thanksgiving Service held at the First United Methodist Church in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, Bishop Quire welcomed President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Sr., senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, traditional and religious leaders, members of the Joint Security, and worshippers from across the country.
The Thanksgiving Service officially commenced Liberia’s 179th Independence Day celebrations, bringing together leaders from the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches of Government alongside clergy and citizens to offer prayers of thanksgiving for God’s continued faithfulness to the Republic.
In his welcome remarks, Bishop Quire emphasized that the gathering was not merely to celebrate another anniversary of Liberia’s independence, but to express heartfelt gratitude to Almighty God for His mercy, protection, and sustaining grace throughout the nation’s history.
“Today, we gather not only to commemorate another milestone in our nation’s history, but, more importantly, to lift our voices in gratitude to Almighty God for His unfailing love, abundant mercy, and sustaining grace,” Bishop Quire said.
Reflecting on Liberia’s journey over the past 179 years, the Resident Bishop noted that God has remained faithful through seasons of peace and conflict, hope and uncertainty, preserving the nation and guiding its people through every challenge.
He reminded the congregation that the true strength of a nation is measured not only by political independence or economic achievements, but also by its reverence for God, commitment to justice, pursuit of peace, and love for one another.
Bishop Quire urged Liberians to use the Independence Day celebration as an opportunity to renew their dedication to building a united, peaceful, prosperous, and God-fearing nation for future generations.
He also expressed appreciation for the presence of President Boakai, Vice President Koung, leaders of the three branches of Government, members of the Diplomatic Corps, traditional and religious leaders, and other distinguished guests, describing their attendance as a demonstration of the nation’s collective desire to seek God’s wisdom and guidance.
Bishop Quire prayed for God’s continued blessings upon Liberia, asking Him to grant wisdom to the nation’s leaders, strengthen its people with courage and hope, heal divisions, and bless the country with enduring peace, justice, and prosperity.
The National Thanksgiving Service marked the official beginning of activities commemorating Liberia’s 179th Independence Day, as citizens gathered in worship, thanksgiving, and prayer for the continued progress and unity of the Republic.
