MONROVIA – Liberia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation on key regional and global issues, including climate change, peace, security, and economic development.
The renewed partnership was highlighted following high-level talks between President Joseph Boakai and visiting DRC Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, who described the discussions as fruitful and encouraging.
Speaking after the meeting, Minister Wagner conveyed that President Boakai emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between the two countries, particularly in areas such as agriculture, transportation, and coordinated engagement at the United Nations Security Council.
She noted that she would return to Kinshasa with a positive report for President Félix Tshisekedi, adding that Liberia extended a warm reception to her delegation.
On Liberia’s side, Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti confirmed that both countries are working closely on bilateral and multilateral priorities, building on momentum from Liberia’s recent campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. She stressed that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to amplifying African voices in global decision-making spaces.
Minister Nyanti further revealed that Liberia and the DRC are jointly advancing efforts toward a proposed landmark United Nations resolution.
The initiative seeks to address the impact of natural resource extraction on climate change, environmental sustainability, and long-term peace and security. According to her, the proposal is expected to stand as a significant diplomatic legacy of both President Boakai and President Tshisekedi.
Beyond diplomatic cooperation, the talks also explored expanded economic engagement between the two nations.
These include prospects for direct air connectivity between Liberia and the DRC, increased bilateral trade, and enhanced collaboration in agriculture, mining, and healthcare.
Both governments, Minister Nyanti emphasized, are committed to transforming longstanding diplomatic relations into practical development partnerships that deliver tangible benefits to their citizens.
She also clarified that the visiting delegation arrived in Liberia from Egypt and underwent all required health screening procedures upon entry, with the Ministry of Health ensuring full compliance with established protocols.
The renewed engagement marks a step forward in Liberia–DRC relations, signaling a shared vision for stronger cooperation in diplomacy, development, and global advocacy.
