The Liberia National Commission on Arms (LiNCA) has issued a stern warning to individuals in possession of illegal firearms, urging them to immediately surrender or register their weapons in accordance with the amended Firearms and Ammunition Control Act of 2015.
In a press statement released Tuesday, the Commission expressed concern over persistent media reports suggesting that some individuals continue to possess unregistered firearms in violation of the country’s firearms law.
LiNCA said the unlawful possession of firearms remains a criminal offense under the amended Firearms and Ammunition Control Act of 2015 and warned that anyone found with a firearm that is not lawfully registered with the Commission could face arrest and prosecution.
The Commission called on all individuals in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them to either the Liberia National Commission on Arms or the Liberia National Police without delay.
According to LiNCA, the illegal possession and use of small arms, light weapons, ammunition, and other related materials pose a serious threat to public safety and national security.
As the country’s statutory authority on arms control, the Commission said it is responsible for regulating, controlling, and managing the lawful possession and use of firearms in both the public and private sectors, while preventing the illicit trafficking and circulation of weapons across Liberia.
LiNCA reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Liberia National Police and other security agencies to enforce the Firearms and Ammunition Control Act of 2015, strengthen national security, and uphold the rule of law.
The Commission also encouraged members of the public to take advantage of the ongoing amnesty period established under Executive Order No. 162 by voluntarily surrendering or registering unlicensed firearms.
It warned that individuals who fail to comply with the provisions of the Firearms and Ammunition Control Act and Executive Order No. 162 risk facing the full force of the law, including arrest and criminal prosecution.
LiNCA emphasized that ensuring compliance with the country’s firearms laws is essential to promoting public safety, reducing the proliferation of illegal weapons, and maintaining peace and security throughout Liberia
