Monrovia-The Liberia Intellectual Property Office (LIPO) and the Liberia National Tourism Authority (LNTA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen the protection of Liberia’s cultural heritage and promote the country’s tourism and creative industries.
The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration between the two institutions, linking intellectual property protection with tourism development and the promotion of Liberia’s cultural and creative assets.
A key component of the MOU is the protection of Geographical Indications (GIs) and Traditional Knowledge (TK), which are intended to help recognize and preserve authentic Liberian products, indigenous practices and knowledge held by local communities.
LIPO Director General Hon. Garmai Koboi and LNTA Director General Hon. Princess Cooper said the agreement would improve coordination between the two institutions while supporting creators, entrepreneurs and small businesses.
The officials said the partnership would help protect and promote Liberia’s cultural and creative assets while creating opportunities for those working in the sector.
The collaboration comes amid growing attention to Liberia’s creative economy, including music, film, fashion, traditional crafts and other cultural industries, which provide opportunities for economic activity and the promotion of Liberian culture.
Under the MOU, the agencies plan to strengthen awareness among artists, cultural practitioners and entrepreneurs about intellectual property rights and how those rights can be used to protect creative works, improve market access and enhance the recognition of Liberian products.
The partnership is also expected to support efforts to preserve Liberia’s cultural heritage while creating opportunities for local communities and businesses to benefit from cultural and tourism resources.
Officials described the MOU as a framework for greater cooperation among intellectual property, culture, tourism and creative-sector stakeholders in advancing Liberia’s economic and cultural development.
